Cargo Ship Movement Maritime transportation has been the most widely used mode of transportation for centuries. Approximately 90% of global trade is transported by more than 50,000 international ocean carriers worldwide.

As a leading international sea and air freight expert, Shengtai receives numerous calls every week regarding sea freight quotes, sea freight rates and shipping. Customers need a clear explanation of the shipping process so that they can prepare and ship their goods quickly. Some of the most common questions include: "What documents are required to ship goods?" "Can an itemized quote be provided?" "How much does shipping cost?" and "What documents are required to ship goods?"

Learn 4 common ocean shipping questions and answers to help you with freight forwarding

What is the difference between original bill of lading, ocean bill of lading and telex release bill of lading in freight forwarding?

The documentation required by a freight forwarder can be very confusing. A question often asked by new freight forwarding clients is the difference between an original bill of lading, an ocean bill of lading, and a telex release bill of lading.

Make an original bill of lading and provide it to the shipper. The shipper will send the original bill of lading to the importer or usually keep it until payment is made. After the shipper authorizes the release of the goods, the original bill of lading can be sent to the importer, who can hand it over to the freight forwarding company to ensure the release of the air or sea cargo.

The Ocean Bill of Lading is a document of title used between the shipper and the importer on a basis of trust. This means no original bill of lading is required and the shipment is automatically authorized for release at destination.

In the case of telex release of the bill of lading, the original bill of lading will still be issued to the shipper after the goods are shipped. Once the shipper decides to release possession of the goods, they will return the original bill of lading to the office of the shipping company that issued it rather than forwarding it to the importer. The carrier's origin office will then electronically send a message to its destination office notifying them that the original bill of lading has been surrendered and authorizing the release of the goods to the importer.

Can BCR provide an all-inclusive shipping quote rather than a detailed itemized quote?

In the freight forwarding industry, there are many different shipping quote formats. Some freight forwarding companies quote total ocean freight, while others provide a detailed fee list.

Some items that may be inaccurate include the type of goods being shipped, the number of packages, the actual weight of the goods, the dimensions of the goods, terms of sale (Incoterms), pickup and delivery addresses. Small differences can make the price different compared to the quoted price. Another item to consider is the currencies in which itemized fees are charged and the exchange rates in those currencies.

What documents does a freight forwarding company require?

In order to increase the speed of ocean shipping for your freight forwarding company, it is very important to have the following freight forwarding documents ready:

      Bill of lading

      commercial invoice

      packing list

      Packaging declaration form

      Fumigation certificate (if applicable)

      Manufacturing Statement (if applicable)

How much does it cost to ship my ocean freight?

Ocean freight pricing is LCL (Less Container Load) or FCL (Full Container Load). LCL ocean shipments will be combined with other LCL shipments to form FCL shipments. An ocean freight quote can include three different components or charges, including:

      country of origin charges

      freight

      destination charge

Once we gather the required information from you, we can easily prepare a timely freight quote based on the size of your ocean shipment and the Incoterms under which the product is being purchased.
